Living in the Low Country of South Carolina has got to be one of life's pleasures. Cooking in the Southern style, the laid back good humor found in almost every relationship, and of course, sea food in abundance.
That abundance is fresh right off the docks and to your plate! Those that provide it have a unique occupation peculiar to watermen everywhere. Proud of their skills in reading wind, sea and clouds, casting their nets in the right areas, praying for the good haul, and "sprinting" for home with the harvest are part and parcel of their life at sea.
Overfishing regulations that seem to be set by bureaucracies vice those most familiar with trends, beset by escalating environmental and fossil fuel foes, they continue to ply their trade with heads held high and confidence in nature.
The scenes of their work are a joy to the artist who tries to capture the essence of their environment so as to make the viewer feel the salt air, the soft winds and the smells of the marsh.
I too was lured to try.
