AN ONLY-IN-AMERICA SAGA

Born before the end of World War I, raised during the Great Depression of the 1930s, an infantryman in the pre-World War II U.S. Army, and retiring as an Air force Lieutenant Colonel, Leon E. (Bill) Braxton’s life can only be described as an Only-in-America saga. From the family-built, two bedroom home for a family of 11 on a hardscrabble cotton farm on Chicken Foot Lane in Cumberland County NC, to flying out of the post-war four power controlled Vienna, the adventure is inspiring. Bill’s insatiable thirst for knowledge seemed to be unquenchable as in his post-retirement he pursued the college education previously denied him by using the G.I. Bill. With a still-growing family, Bill entered the university life wholeheartedly at the University of Miami majoring in education and German. He followed that up with graduate work and a Master’s Degree in German at Kent State University, taking advantage of the National Defense Education Act. Closing in on the coveted Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), he opted for the sunnier climes of south Florida and a high school teaching assignments in Hialeah and then a professorship at Stetson University in DeLand Florida. Study abroad in Germany at the auspices of the University spiced the active life already being lived to its fullest. Another stint of high school teaching in Cocoa Beach and as a French professor at Brevard Community College was not the end of his teaching exploits as he added Spanish as well.
