There is an old saying, reportedly from the Pennsylvania Dutch, that "Too soon we grow old, too late we grow smart." That was certainly my case. Oh, I had a great set of parents that set me in the right direction; I was blessed with some God-given skills, attributes and gifts. I used some, abused some and ignored others, for that was the influences of my environment. Peer pressure in an industrial city that reveled in Polish American clubs, Irish bars, high school football rivalries and post-depression recovery left many moral values behind.
Somehow, an ember of Christian values was sparked by my parents right-from-wrong approach and my travels the world over widened my horizons. Then, I found my self as a leader of my own family unit and the responsibilities became much more apparent. And so now, as a doddering old man, I can honestly say my journey as a Christian was never a straight one, but I believe I have found the path I need to be on - Accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior, inviting him into my heart, and asking him for forgiveness of my sins. Come read this testimony of one man who "Got old before he got smart." Printed; family distribution |
